Our Approach

Frank Giustra (far left), President Clinton, and Maria Emma Mejía, executive director of the Fundación Pies Descalzos, meet students at the Pies Descalzos school in Barranquilla, where CGSGI supplies two meals a day to students.
The Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative is applying the Clinton Foundation’s unique approach to enable sustainable growth, with the goal of ultimately changing the way business is done in the developing world.
CGSGI has begun projects in Latin America to strengthen enabling factors to growth such as health care, education, and entrepreneurship in Colombia and Peru. Several core operating principles guide our work across these programs and future efforts. First, we serve as an honest broker, emphasizing trust, cooperation, and transparency, to bring together stakeholders who have not previously worked together. Second, we identify effective projects currently being implemented by governments, NGOs, and/or the private sector, and explore ways to bring them to scale or replicate and adapt successful initiatives elsewhere. Third, we determine where our expertise and help are needed most – whether it is technical assistance, capacity building, or capital – and work with partners to provide it. Fourth, in areas where the Foundation already possesses operational expertise, such as in health and business development, we will partner with local actors on implementation.
