Juana Zorilla
In Latin America, Juana Zorilla discovered she was HIV-positive after visiting a nearby clinic in the Dominican Republic. When she came to the clinic, Juana was extremely sick and weighed in at only 104 pounds. Today she is a healthy 126-pound peer counselor, helping other patients at her clinic cope with their diagnosis and adhere to treatment.
In the past, middle-income countries like the Dominican Republic have often been ineligible to receive the same reduced prices on medicines that low-income countries like Tanzania could access, even though the poor who could not afford treatments were bearing the brunt of the pandemic in both countries.
